Make your good intentions achievable, small steps make a big difference

The new year is just around the corner, and that means many people are thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s eating healthier, exercising more, sleeping better or stressing less: New Year’s resolutions are a great way to make positive changes in your life. Yet, we often see that resolutions are too extreme, making them hard to keep up. That’s why, as a pharmacist, I advocate for realistic and achievable goals that really make a difference without putting unachievable pressure on yourself.

Small adjustments, big effect

Research shows that small, gradual changes are often more sustainable than large ones. This is because your brain needs time to integrate new habits into your daily routine.

Here are some examples of achievable New Year's resolutions that will contribute to your health:

Move more

Instead of forcing yourself to go to the gym every day, you can make small changes to your daily activities:

- Park your car a few blocks away from your destination and walk the last bit.

- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

- Do some simple exercises at home (10 minutes is enough)

Studies show that even short periods of extra exercise can increase your energy levels and improve your overall health.

Better sleep

A good night's sleep is essential for your energy and well-being. Make better sleep a realistic goal:

- Set a regular bedtime .

- Reduce screen use an hour before bedtime to avoid blue light.

- Take supplements containing magnesium or melatonin to help you fall asleep better.

Less stress

It's impossible to completely avoid stress, but you can learn to deal with it better:

- Schedule 10 minutes each day for mindfulness or breathing exercises.

- Maintain a good work-life balance . Don't let your work take over your personal life. Set clear boundaries between work and free time, especially if you work from home.

- Say no more often . It is important to know your limits and not always say yes to requests that cause you extra stress.

Research has shown that these habits can lower cortisol levels (your stress hormone).

More energy

Do you often feel listless? Start with small adjustments:

- Eat a nutritious breakfast with plenty of protein and fiber.

- Drink enough water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

- Try to get outside for a little while every day . This helps regulate your body clock and can improve your energy and mood.

The power of realism

Setting achievable goals is not only good for your body, but also for your motivation. When you see yourself achieving your goals, it gives a boost to your self-confidence, which in turn encourages you to keep going.

Start small, but start!

The most important thing about New Year's resolutions is to start somewhere. Pick one or two small changes that feel doable to you, and work from there. A healthy lifestyle is not a sprint, it's a marathon, it's about the long term.
