It occurs naturally when a woman's ovaries no longer have functioning eggs. At birth, most women have approximately 1 to 3 million eggs, which are gradually lost over the woman's life. By the time girls have their first period, they have an average of about 400,000 eggs. By menopause, a woman may have fewer than 10,000 eggs. A small percentage of these eggs are lost through normal ovulation (the monthly cycle). Most eggs die due to a process called atresia.
Consequences of menopause
About 75%-85% of menopausal women experience hot flashes, which can last an average of five years. Hot flashes and night sweats can make sleep difficult and these symptoms can last up to five years.
Hot flashes: For many, hot flashes are unavoidable during perimenopause, the years before actual menopause, which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Some women experience hot flashes without sweating, while others sweat so profusely that they need to change clothes.
Night sweats: where hot flashes at night lead to soaked sheets, is an additional discomfort.
About 75% of women experience hot flashes and night sweats during perimenopause and menopause. Fortunately, there is a minority who do not suffer from this, while others only experience mild hot flashes. The duration and frequency vary, with an occasional hot flash lasting one to five minutes and occurring in some women only a few times a week, while others face severe hot flashes on a daily basis, up to 20 to 30 times a day. Understanding these symptoms helps women prepare for this stage of life and deal effectively with possible discomfort.
Do you recognize any of these symptoms and are they taking over? Then be sure to contact your doctor.
